Joan L. Bybee (Hooper; born 1945) is an American linguist. She is a Distinguished Professor at the University of New Mexico. She served as president of the Linguistic Society of America in 2004. Much of her work concerns grammaticalisation, stochastics, modality, phonology and morphology. Bybee has a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, a master's degree from San Diego State University and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles. == Bibliography == *Hooper, Joan B. 1976.
